For the 55th Session of the Commission on Population and Development Side Event, “Economic development and demographic dividend among ASEAN countries”, 21 April 2022, 8:30 – 10:00 AM (EDT)

Greetings to everyone!

At this juncture, we would like to thank our distinguished speakers, panelists and attendees who took time to be part of this side event.

We are privileged to listen and get inputs from our panelists

Professor Rizal Damanik,

Dr. Michael Dominic del Mundo,

Dr. Sang-hyop Lee,

Dr. Omas Bulan Samosir, and

Deputy Secretary General Jinnanggoon Rojananan.

Indeed, the conversations in this side event opened an opportunity for all of us to learn further about the trends and prospects for the ASEAN member countries in terms of inclusive economic growth and optimizing the demographic bonus.  May this be the beginning of a potential South to South cooperation among the ASEAN — to learn from each other, to support one another and to progress together.

We concur to the claim that inclusive and sustained economic growth will not prosper without investing in our people in all life stages and advancing family development.  All our economic efforts are in vain if we fail to realize the fundamental principle of the ICPD Program of Action of putting people at the heart of every development effort.

Despite their diversity, ASEAN countries find similar challenges to win the demographic dividend, starting with wholistic family development programs to address their unmet needs, labor market policies that will support families and addressing the increasing numbers of senior citizens.

As I conclude this side event, I wish everyone a promise of good health and peace and a better life ahead.

Again, a pleasant day to all of us.
